CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — This grant provides renewed multi-year general operating support to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, considered to be one of the top five orchestras in the United States. Now in its 121st season, the Symphony's 106 musicians perform more than 150 concerts each year for 500,000 Chicago area residents and visitors. It also sponsors the CSO Chorus and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, which is the only training orchestra affiliated with a major American company. Almost 200,000 students, teachers, seniors and young musicians participate annually in a deep range of community outreach and music education programs offered through its Institute for Learning, Access and Training.
The MacArthur Foundation awarded Chicago Symphony Orchestra $500,000 between 2010 and 2013.
