GLENCOE, ILLINOIS — This grant will provide renewed multi-year general operating support to Writers' Theatre, a nationally-recognized, critically-acclaimed theatre that produces classic and contemporary works of literary significance in intimate settings. Writers' Theatre develops new works through its Literary Development Initiative, and has commissioned and developed new plays that have toured nationally, such as A Minister's Wife. It engages more than 7,500 underserved Chicago area students through free, academically rigorous arts education curricula that were recognized in a 2010 Chicago Community Trust-commissioned arts education survey as one of the largest local theatre educational outreach programs.
The MacArthur Foundation awarded Writers' Theatre $262,500 between 2010 and 2013.
