MacArthur Award for Creative & Effective Institutions

QUITO, ECUADOR — Fundación para la Sobrevivencia del Pueblo Cofan works to reclaim and protect ancestral territory in Northeastern Ecuadoran Amazon. FSC has successfully protected over 1,000,000 acres of rainforest, wetlands, and rivers through an innovative strategy combining formal alliances with the Ecuadoran government, extensive field presence of Cofan Rangers, and a network of community-based conservation projects. The purpose of the recommended grant is to create a stable and sustained organization by seeding a long-term endowment fund, establishing a cash reserve, paying off office mortgages, improving field station infrastructure, consolidating staffing structure, and implementing a fundraising strategy.

The MacArthur Foundation awarded Fundacion para la Sobrevivencia del Pueblo Cofan $500,000 between 2010 and 2013.
