Girls' Secondary Education in Developing Countries

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) is a US-based non-profit organization whose mission is to empower women, advance gender equality and fight poverty in the developing world. The goal of this grant is to enhance the participation and continuation of vulnerable adolescent girls in secondary schools in post-conflict Northern Uganda. ICRW will work closely with Forum for African Women Educationalists, Uganda to conduct research that aims to: 1) Provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between pregnancy and school dropout among girls in two districts in the West Nile Province of Northern Uganda 2) Identify the gendered social norms and expectations related to reproduction and family formation that influence girls' secondary school enrollment, retention and completion in the West Nile Province.

The MacArthur Foundation awarded International Center for Research on Women $385,000 between 2010 and 2013.
