  BEIJING, CHINA — Peking University's Center for International and Strategic Studies was established in 2007 and is a leading Chinese center conducting policy relevant research and analysis in the field of international security. The Center has served as a 'core' institution for the last three years, under the Foundation's Asia Security Initiative. In this capacity, it coordinated the work of a cluster of grantees on strengthening the regional security architecture of institutions, relationships and alliances in the Asia-Pacific. This renewal grant would provide support for policy research and U.S.-China expert dialogue on issues posing major challenges to U.S.-China relations and stability in the broader region. The work will address the potential for bilateral cooperation on: Afghanistan and Pakistan, the South China Sea, the future of the Korean peninsula and the challenge posed by North Korea, U.S.- China- Japan relationships, and the implications for U.S.-China relations and the Taiwan Straits of the 2012 presidential elections in Taiwan. Funds would be used for project-related staff salaries, convening, publications, and travel.
