CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — The Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law provides legal representation to tenants and pursues a comprehensive agenda of local, state and federal policy development and public education about affordable housing. As in many other parts of the country, Chicago-area low-income families face a demonstrable shortage of safe, affordable rental housing. The problem is exacerbated by tenants unable to afford competent lawyers regarding disputes with landlords and by local elected officials uniformed about their obligations to support affordable rental housing. The grant will ensure the Shriver Center can continue to provide legal advocacy, research, and education, toward the goal of preserving publicly supported rental housing in the Chicago area.
