Arts & Culture in Chicago
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — Aguijon Theater Company is dedicated to promoting cultural exploration, discussion and the performance of Spanish-language and bilingual works. It is the oldest continuously operating Spanish language theater company in Chicago and is well-regarded in Chicago's Latino communities, the broader Chicago area, and nationally. This grant will support the Voces Caribeñas project in which Aguijon will showcase Spanish-language plays by three distinguished Caribbean playwrights. The goal is to explore the differences and similarities among populations who share strong cultural and historical connections to slavery, European colonization, and the plantation system. MacArthur funds will support travel, artist and technical staff fees, and production costs.
The MacArthur Foundation awarded Aguijon Theater $24,000 between 2010 and 2013.
