The first round of grants made through the MacArthur Funds for Arts and Culture at the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation and the Prince Charitable Trusts have been made to 65 Chicago area arts and cultural organizations. The total value of the grants, which are primarily for general operating support, total $1.15 million.
The fund at the Driehaus Foundation is used primarily for general operating support to arts and cultural organizations with annual budgets of approximately $500,000 or less. The fund at the Prince Charitable Trusts is used to support mid-sized arts and cultural organizations, those with annual budgets between $500,000 and $2 million. As with the fund at Driehaus, the emphasis is on support of general operations.
The Driehaus Foundation awarded 38 grants totaling $500,000 and the Prince Charitable Trusts awarded 27 grants totaling $655,000. The MacArthur Funds for Arts and Culture were established at the two foundations in April 2003 through grants totaling $6.5 million from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The funds will be used over a five-year period.
"The vitality of Chicago is reflected in the arts groups that can be found in almost every neighborhood," said Sunny Fischer, executive director of the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation. "The grants we have made through the MacArthur Fund reflect the importance we place on providing small arts organizations with the financial and technical support they need and deserve."
"The regional arts and cultural institutions enrich the lives of those fortunate enough to live here," said Benna Wilde, managing director of the Chicago offices of the Prince Charitable Trusts. "These organizations face many challenges in carrying out their artistic missions. We are pleased to provide this highly flexible support and know it will be put to good use for the benefit of all."
The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation
The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation is a family foundation formed in 1992. Its primary mission is to benefit individuals and communities by preserving and enhancing the built and natural environments. The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation also supports the performing and visual arts and makes grants to organizations that provide opportunities for economically disadvantaged individuals.
Prince Charitable Trusts
The Prince Charitable Trusts were established in 1947 from the bequests of Frederick Henry Prince and his wife, Abbie Norman Prince. The three trusts operate as a family foundation with giving programs in the city of Chicago, the Washington D.C. region, and the state of Rhode Island. In Chicago, the Trusts support the core mission of arts organizations through general operating support grants, project grants to strengthen organizational capacity, and the Prince Prize for Commissioning Original Work.
